SHERBROOKE — The Municipality of the District of St Mary’s will hold a special council meeting to discuss a cash settlement for the transfer station buildings destroyed by hurricane Fiona.

The municipality has been offered approximately $457,000 by their insurance company following the damage that occurred during the storm in September 2022.

The committee of the whole voted to proceed with a recommendation to accept the payout on Nov. 15.

“This would normally have received final approval at the next regular council meeting but that won’t happen until the second Monday in December. Given the importance of this item we decided to do a special council meeting to complete the approval faster,” said Doug Patterson, chief administrative officer for the municipality, in a statement to The Journal on Nov. 20.

Council will hold a special meeting on Nov. 22 at 4 p.m. to vote on the cash settlement.

The municipality has committed $6,000 toward the design of the new build, according to a staff report. It cost more than $38,000 to demolish the old buildings.

The district expects to release a tender for the new building before the end of the year.
