GUYSBOROUGH – The Municipality of the District of Guysborough’s (MODG’s) recreation department announced on June 22 that this year’s Gran Fondo, scheduled for August 27, would be cancelled.

The Gran Fondo, which mean ‘big ride’ in Italian, is a mass participation cycling event with routes for various skill levels and experience. The event has been part of the summer schedule in the MODG since 2016. However, this year was the first year that the event was scheduled for the last weekend in August. Previously, the event had been held on the first or second week of September.

Angie Tavares, MODG’s director of recreation and special projects, told The Journal on June 23 that the event was cancelled due to low registration numbers. Without enough participants, the event wasn’t feasible.

Tavares went on to say that the MODG would work on plans to get more participants next year .

The Gran Fondo has been cancelled twice before, once in 2019 due to Hurricane Dorian and again the following year, 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2021 Gran Fondo was limited to 150 participants due to the ongoing pandemic and registration slots sold out quickly.

All those who have already paid the registration fee for 2022 will get a full refund.
