GUYSBOROUGH – MODG’S recreation staff are hoping to have the Chedabucto Lifestyle Complex’s shinny rink and figure-eight skating loop ready to go by Dec. 23 this year.

“The prior week will be spent on getting it ready,” Recreation Director Angie Travares told The Journal Monday. “And we need some consecutive days below -10 degrees.”

Bookings for the shinny rink are brisk already for Jan. and Feb., she said. For any groups interested in private bookings, Travares suggests confirming them soon.

Among current bookings is a women’s hockey tournament with teams from Halifax, Sydney, New Glasgow and Antigonish.

A few new items at the skating facility this year include adult skate-aids, which are currently being built. These will provide assistance for adults who need a little support on the ice, including those just learning to skate.

Last year staff received a suggestion that a railing would be helpful for skaters getting on and off the figure-eight skating loop. “So that is in place now for safety for kids and adults alike,” said Travares.

The recreation department is planning to host adult skate nights on Thursdays and children’s skate nights on Tuesdays.

For those who already skate and want to improve, the recreation department is hoping to offer the CanPowerSkate program this year.
