Local RCMP send clear messages

Drinking and driving won't be tolerated in Guysborough County this holiday season or at any time. That was the message local RCMP delivered to drivers on Friday, December 16 when they joined forces with the MADD chapter of Antigonish in conducting joint check stops thoughout the county.

"The purpose of this check point was to remind motorists of the dangers of drinking and driving," explains Cst. Jamie Parsons of the Canso RCMP detachment. "Drunk driving crashes are the most frequently committed violent crimes in North America, yet they can be prevented if the public would simply remember the three keys to safety before they head out the door to their holiday destinations: drive safe, drive sober and buckle up. We want the public to feel safe when they are on the roads of Guysborough County this holiday season, and we will be out there conducting check stops all over the county at any given time."

Parsons says the other message the RCMP wants to put out there is: "It's winter time and with that comes colder temperatures, especially at night. We want people to slow down and drive with caution; your vehicle doesn't handle the same in the winter time as it does in the summer and there are many road hazards such as black ice and slush which need to be watched out for. We also want people to take the time to make sure their cars are free of snow and ice on the windshields, and that front and rear lights and the license plate are visible, before heading out on the street. Many times we see people driving their vehicles with a small port hole to look out to see where they are going, or just taking the time to clean the front windshield and neglecting the back window. This will not be tolerated this winter and motorists will find themselves being charged under the Motor Vehicle Act for such things."

If you wish to receive any more information or tips for safe winter driving please contact your local RCMP Detachment.
