Showdown in Sherbrooke

Candidates prepare for debate

By Andrew Waugh

SHERBROOKE - Dave Horton's wish has been granted.

In last week's Journal, Horton, the Liberal candidate for Guysborough-Sheet Harbour in the upcoming provincial election, challenged Conservative Ronnie Chisholm and the NDP's Jim Boudreau to a public debate before the June 13 poll.

"Mr. Chisholm and Mr. Boudreau have accepted," Horton's campaign manager Rosalee Parker told The Journal late last week. "The debate will be held on Tuesday, June 6, at 6 pm at the Sherbrooke Lions' Club."

Parker said details of how the debate, slated to run for about 90 minutes, would be run were still being finalized. However she said the candidates would be asked to respond to several questions and be given an opportunity to outline their respective campaign platforms.

The event will be hosted and sponsored by The Hawk radio station. Parker said The Hawk's Bob MacEachern would moderate the debate.

Admission is free and the public is encouraged to attend.

Meanwhile, The Journal has learned that the Green Party of Nova Scotia will also field a candidate in next week's election. Marike Finlay de Monchy's name appears on the party's website as the Green candidate for the riding. A Green Party source told The Journal that she understood Finlay de Monchy did not live in the riding.

Editor's note: Video clips of Tuesday's debate will be available to view on The Journal's website, www.guysboroughjournal.com, next week.
