Guysborough honours volunteers
St. Francis Harbour - Volunteers from throughout the District of Guysborough were the guests of honour at the municipality's annual Volunteer Recognition Night at the parish hall in St. Francis Harbour last Thursday.
Guest speaker for the event was Danny Berry, general manager of the Antigonish Junior A Bulldogs and educator. Berry talked about the importance of volunteers to our communities and shared stories about volunteers in his own life. Particularly moving was his story about students at his school recently raising $10,000 over just 15 days to help the family of a schoolmate who is fighting cancer.
Thirty volunteers received certificates of appreciation from their municipal councillors. Lorraine Torrey was recognized as Guysborough's volunteer of the year. A former municipal councillor, Torrey is a former member of the Guysborough District School Board and has served as a volunteer with the Guysborough Legion for the past 30 years. She has volunteered and continues to volunteer with a variety of other organizations as well. Torrey represented the District of Guysborough at the provincial volunteer recognition event in Halifax last month.
