Funding campaign launched

GUYSBOROUGH - Chedabucto Place Association officially launched its fundraising campaign on Tuesday with the goal of raising $100,000 to complete a state-of-the-art theatre performance centre at Guysborough Academy.

Construction of the theatre began when the school was built in 2001. The exterior building envelope was completed, awaiting the installation of the seating, sound and lighting systems. In the spring of 2005, Chedabucto Place Association was re-activated and a business plan was created. In a short time, the association has successfully raised over 90 per cent of the funds required to complete the structure, which includes $900,000 from federal, provincial and municipal governments and two large donations by individuals totaling $95,000. An additional $100,000 is required to finish the project.

Fundraising chairman Lloyd Hines is hopeful that the county, community and corporate sector will once again display generosity in supporting the completion of the facility.

"This exciting facility will serve both the needs of the cultural community and the students who will have great new classroom and performance space. Not only will the theatre have a significant impact on the artistic and performing aspects of our region, but it will also bring more people to our county to take part in a concert or participate in a production."

In the upcoming weeks, all Guysborough County residents will receive a fundraising brochure by mail with information about the campaign and a breakdown of how to contribute. There are three levels of giving, including Builders Level ranging from $50 to $499, Take-a-Seat level ranging from $500 to $999 and Patrons Level which ranges from $1,000 to $4,999. Contributions may be spread over a two-year period and are eligible for a tax receipt.

As Guysborough County optimistically prepares for an unprecedented era of economic development with large industrial projects on the horizon, facilities like Chedabucto Place Performance Centre are a core building block required to encourage families to live here. You can help support this effort with a financial contribution.
