Seafreez will take another crack at mackerel fishery

CANSO - The Seafreez fish plant in Canso experienced some bumps along the way with a trial winter mackerel fishery this year, but plant manager Kay Ryan says they're going to try again. Quota allotted to Seafreez last fall for the mackerel fishery is good for a year.

"We made one trip out and there was no mackerel," Ryan said of their efforts in the fishery in recent months. A boat had been moved from Newfoundland to Canso for the winter mackerel fishery. But Ryan said the time of year wasn't great for fishing mackerel.

"The boat will be back in Canso hopefully on the weekend, weather permitting, and we'll make a go at it. It's all timing." She said people are hopeful Seafreez will be more successful with mackerel in the spring.

Meanwhile the Canso plant started processing snow crab on Monday. Ryan said the plant will probably employ up to 100 workers in the coming weeks in processing jobs that should last until mid-August. "The wind and rain isn't helping," she said of the early snow crab season.

"If all goes well it'll be fairly steady for the next few months. Normally May, June and July are quite busy."
