Council releases cash for performance centre
GUYSBOROUGH - After years of planning and waiting, things are coming together quickly now for the planned Chedabucto Place Performance Centre in Guysborough.
At last Wednesday's regular monthly meeting, District of Guysborough council agreed to release nearly $100,000 it has held in trust for the project from individual donors. The project got the green light recently after securing $900,000 in funding from the three levels of government and achieving a joint-use agreement with the Strait Regional School Board. The donors' contributions are being forwarded to the non-profit group overseeing fundraising for the project, Chedabucto Place Association.
The District of Guysborough's own contribution to the project is $100,000.
In 2001, the district accepted an anonymous $73,000 donation and in 2002 a $15,000 donation from Dr. Lauder Brunton. Interest on those two gifts has grown to $10,000.
Chedabucto Place Association is now starting a $100,000 local fundraising campaign to raise the additional funds needed to complete the project. The total cost of the performance centre is expected to be $1,050,000.
Design and construction of the facility is being overseen by a steering committee, including representatives of Chedabucto Place Association, the Strait Regional School Board, and Archibald and Jones Architects Ltd. The current construction schedule has a call for tenders scheduled for late April, construction starting around the end of May, and substantial completion by September.
