Two arrested following theft of police vehicle

GUYSBOROUGH - What might have been a routine traffic stop in the Monastery area last Wednesday evening turned out to be anything but ordinary after an RCMP vehicle was stolen.

Guysborough RCMP arrested two local men - Allen Lucas of Sunnyville and Ricky Borden of Monastery - following an investigation into an altercation between an RCMP member and the suspects when the suspects were being stopped for a traffic violation in the Monastery area, just inside the Guysborough County line. Resistance demonstrated by the suspects caused the RCMP member on the scene to "tactically reposition himself to summon back up at which time the suspects managed to steal the police car," according to an RCMP statement. The car was later abandoned roadside with no damage.

One suspect was arrested at approximately 2 am Thursday at a residence and the second suspect turned himself in to Guysborough RCMP that morning. Subsequently the two adult males have been charged with Theft of the Vehicle, Assault Police Officer and Obstruction. Additional charges may be laid as the investigation continues.

The suspects were held in custody pending the laying of charges, which took place at court in Antigonish Monday. One was released on conditions and the other suspect was remanded in custody for a bail hearing on May 3.

There were no injuries in the incident.
