Elevator needed in Pines Manor

By Helen Murphy

CANSO - The need for an elevator at the Pines Manor seniors' complex was raised at Canso town council Monday evening.

Mayor Ray White noted that council had lobbied for an elevator for the two-storey building on Union St. in the past, but the improvement to the facility has not yet been made. He said residents in the Pines Manor are aging and some find it difficult to carry groceries upstairs.

Contacted by The Journal Tuesday, Pines Manor resident Homer Nickerson said most of the residents are in their 80s and older and are having great difficulty using the stairs.

"We find it awfully hard," said Nickerson, who will soon be 91. "We have one lady who's here who can barely get down the stairs."

"We need an elevator in here in the worst kind of way," he stressed.

Council agreed to contact provincial authorities in an effort to get an elevator installed.

In other council news, councillor Finn Armsworthy reported that the Canso pool would be operating this year, after being closed last summer.

"With the help of the youth group and the Friends of Canso, things look good," he told council. He also reported that the rink will close soon, and local volunteers will be honoured at a ceremony at the Shamrock Club on April 11.

Vince Cohoon reported that cardboard and paper will no longer be accepted at the Enviro-Depot in Canso, effective April 1. The town will have to collect and transport paper products that would have gone to the depot, adding to their waste management costs.

Councillors also lamented the fact that the loss of this service would be hurting the owner/operator of the depot, who was able to sell these recyclables. The council decided to write to the Minister of Environment to express their displeasure at the change.
