More education needed on recycling, composting

By Helen Murphy

MULGRAVE - At the regular monthly meeting of Mulgrave town council Monday night, a question was raised regarding black garbage bags being deposited in some industrial waste containers in the town. Although Mayor Leonard MacDonald says he doesn't think the matter is a "big problem", it does point to the ongoing need for education on recycling and composting.

Like other municipalities, Mulgrave now requires residents to sort recyclables and compostable materials from garbage, which is to be disposed of in clear bags. MacDonald says non-compliance costs the municipality, and therefore its taxpayers, more money.

MacDonald said a recent survey done in the region also shows that a lot of people aren't composting. The town made composters available to residents, at a subsidized price, a few years ago. He said there is interest in pick-up of organics at the curb, but that would add 50 per cent to the town's pick-up costs.

MacDonald says the town will look at future educational programs in conjunction with other municipalities in the region to address these concerns.
