Fletcher buys Canso building

By Helen Murphy

CANSO - After several months of what he describes as "locking horns" with the Town of Canso, Ken Fletcher has purchased the building he occupies with his business, the Canso Trading Post.

Fletcher had previously been served an eviction notice from the town for the property he rented, which had been up for tax sale. He told The Journal Tuesday he bought the property last Thursday following an offer and counter offer. In the end, he said he had to pay more than he wanted to, and more than he thought it was worth, in order to get the building at 143 Main Street and keep his business in Canso. His eviction deadline had been extended until March 1 while the purchase was being negotiated.

"I chose to throw in a few thousand extra dollars for it," he said. "I paid $13,000, pretty close to asking price."

Fletcher says in the way it negotiated this deal, the town has set a precedent, in terms of selling price, for the rest of the properties it has up for tax sale.
