Time is right for GED, safety training - GCRDA

By Helen Murphy

GUYSBOROUGH - There's no time like the present for many county residents to start working on their Grade 12 and safety training if they'd like to get work on the proposed Keltic Petrochemicals project in Goldboro, according to the Guysborough County Regional Development Authority (GCRDA). The agency is urging people to start thinking about basic upgrading and skills training now.

Gordon MacDonald, the GCRDA's special projects manager, says the agency is working with project proponents to determine specific skill needs, but they know now that basic requirements in all areas will include a Grade 12 education (or the equivalent GED) and safety training.

"We've talked to the building trades and they're planning to have some information sessions down here soon," notes MacDonald. He said the GCRDA is also looking to provid various training opportunities, and project partners are likely to do some of their own training.

"For most of the training that's going to be provided, that (Grade 12 and safety training) is going to be a prerequisite," says MacDonald. He stresses that people should look at "anything that's going to make your résumé stand out when the time comes." MacDonald says such basic training is not only good for pursuing further training and work with the Keltic project, but also other industrial projects that may come to Guysborough County in the near future.

Those interested in discussing upgrading and training options can contact the Guysborough County Adult Learning Association (GALA) at 533-4252 or Gordon MacDonald, GCRDA, at 533-2890.
